Hi and welcome to Year 1!
Our teachers in Year 1 are:
Class 3 - Miss Riley and Miss Crompton
Our aim is to ensure that your children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. Please don’t hesitate to come and see us if you have any queries or questions.
Typically, a Year 1 morning consists of:
-English: We use a Focus Text each half term to drive our learning. These books range from The Gruffalo to The Hungry Caterpillar. We use a variety of teaching methods to keep children engaged in their learning and help develop their handwriting, spelling and composition skills.
-Maths: We try to keep our Maths lessons as practical as possible, helping children develop a good understanding of tricky concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions to name a few.
-Read Write Inc: Children will be grouped with other children with a similar reading ability. They will spend time learning new sounds, word reading and speed reading. Also they will use lots of partner work to develop their comprehension skills and talk for writing strategies.
Our afternoon sessions are typically when we look at Creative Curriculum. We use ‘Big Questions’ to drive our learning in History, Geography and Science. Year 1 children love learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’, hot and cold places of the world, materials and other exciting topics. We have Creative Weeks each half term, when our focus is more on Art and Music. Children will love creating their own wrapping paper for Father Christmas and their own fire collages.
Other general information:
Reading Books- Children will receive 3 books each week. 1 book at their current Read Write Inc level, 1 at a previous RWI level and a library book. They will also be given a yellow diary, which must be signed 5 times each week.
Spellings- Children will received 6 spellings at the start of the year. This will increase to 8 in Spring Term and 10 in Summer. These will be practiced daily in school and then tested on a Friday.
PE- Class 3 have PE on Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure correct PE kit in school.
PE-Class 4 have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please made sure they have their kits.
Snack money- £2 a week for pancake and juice. To be paid on a Monday in an envelope with child’s name clearly written on.
We are sure that you will have a fantastic time in Year 1 and we will have so much fun!

Class 3 used the story 'The Great Pet Sale' to help us learn about money. We used 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins to buy the animals from the shop. Some of us even had a go at finding different ways to make the amounts.
Class 3 went on a 'listening walk' as we learned about the sense of hearing. We heard lots of loud and quiet sounds on our walk. Our big ears helped us to hear all the sounds around us.

Class 4 have had a busy start to the year from learning to count to 120 in Maths to learning the different body parts in Science. We have also enjoyed getting active every Tuesday with Wigan Active lifestyle and learning about how to keep healthy.
