Hello and a very warm welcome to our Year 6 class page.
Our class teachers are:
Class 11 - Miss Mason, Mrs Danson
Class 12 - Mrs Lord, Mrs Battersby
Year 6 is an exciting year full of fun and engaging learning. In the Autumn term and at the start of Spring, our topic of ‘The Victorians’ will take us on a journey to the 1800s where we will discover what life was like for our ancestors. Queen Victoria, the workhouse, working children and famous Victorian figures are just some of the areas covered, with a key focus on the Industrial Revolution. We will read a range of texts including the books Street Child and Cogheart. We will enjoy writing a wide range of genres including balanced arguments, a biography, persuasive letters, diary entries and a mystery story. In science, children will take a hands on approach to the topics of living things and their habitats, classification and evolution & inheritance.
As the Spring term progresses into the Summer term, we will study the Americas and the Mayan Civilisation. We will explore Mayan culture, their calendar, key landmarks, gods, the number system and how Mayan history affects tourism in Mexico today. Writing genres will include explanation texts, adverts, stories, instructional writing and non chronological reports. In science, we will explore the heart & circulatory system as well as light and electricity.
Year 6 is a very important year, as the children take their SATS tests in May. Firstly, we don't want any worries or stress from the children. These tests are just a small part of all the amazing things we do over the course of the year. We aim to prepare the children fully in fun and engaging ways and only expect that our children put 100% effort into their studies.
It is important that children complete homework and hand it in on time, as well as reading 4 times a week to somebody at home, to support their learning. This year, an Easter booster club will be on offer. More information to follow.
PE days: Wednesday & Thursday
Homework: Handed out every Friday and to be returned the following Friday.
Each week Year 6 will get spellings, either maths or English, and sometimes science. There are also times when projects linked to science, geography or history may be sent home.
Please make sure children read 4 times a week and access Spelling Shed at least 4 times a week.
I’m looking forward to an exciting year in year 6 and am here to support your children in any way I can.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak to me at the classroom door, or phone the school office and leave a message, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
