Class 3 – Year 1

Hi and Welcome to Class 3 - Year 1

Our aim is to ensure that your children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One.

During the Summer term our focus will be on embedding the skills taught in the Spring term such as capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and correct letter formation. We will also look at embedding the conjunction ‘and’ to join two sentences as well as consolidating some of our spellings with suffixes.

In Maths we will be looking at fractions, time,  position and directional language and the 4 calculations.

Geography – Our Geography topic will begin in Summer 2 where we will look at Africa.

History – During Summer 1 we will be learning all about the Great Fire of London.

Science – Our Science topic is Animals and their habitats.

RE – We will be reading and exploring a range of stories linked to Pentecost and the Ascension.

Computing – We will be looking at algorithms for the Beebots and then how to handle data.

Art – In Summer 1 we will be looking at sculptures and making house out of clay.

RSHE – In Spring 1 we will be focusing on people who help us, sun safety and our strengths.

Typically, a Year 1 morning consists of:

-Maths: We try to keep our Maths lessons as practical as possible, helping children develop a good understanding of tricky concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions to name a few.

-Read Write Inc: Children will be grouped with other children with a similar reading ability. They will spend time learning new sounds, word reading and speed reading. Also they will use lots of partner work to develop their comprehension skills and talk for writing strategies.

Our afternoon sessions are typically when we look at the wider curriculum including History, Geography and Science. Year 1 children will be learning about the Royal Family, The UK and our local area and plants. We also have weekly Art or DT, Music and RSHE lessons.
