Our aim is to ensure that your children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One.
During the Spring term our focus will be on embedding the skills taught in the Autumn term such as capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and correct letter formation. We will also look at using the conjunction ‘and’ to join two sentences.
In Maths we will be looking at 2D shapes, fraction, position and directional language and multiplication.
Geography – Our Geography topic will begin in Spring 2 where we will look at the seaside.
History – During Spring 1 we look at the local area including settlements and employment. For this we are hoping to visit Spinners Mill which is local to school.
Science – Our Science topic is Animals but our focus will be on humans. We will look at naming body parts, exploring our senses and carrying out an investigation.
RE – We will be reading and exploring a range of stories from the bible which focus on Galilee to Jerusalem. The children will explore these in a range of ways and look at how as Christians we can live out the messages in our lives today.
Computing – We will be looking at Programming and creating algorithms for the Beebots to follow using directional language. In Spring 2 we will move onto creating media.
Art – In Spring 2 we will be looking at painting.
RSHE – In Spring 1 we will be focusing on on-line safety. Then moving onto our own well being and how we can help ourselves feel good.
Typically, a Year 1 morning consists of:
-English: We use a Focus Text each half term to drive our learning. These books consists of a range of fiction and non-fiction books. We use a variety of teaching methods to keep children engaged in their learning and help develop their handwriting, spelling and composition skills.
-Maths: We try to keep our Maths lessons as practical as possible, helping children develop a good understanding of tricky concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions to name a few.
-Read Write Inc: Children will be grouped with other children with a similar reading ability. They will spend time learning new sounds, word reading and speed reading. Also they will use lots of partner work to develop their comprehension skills and talk for writing strategies.
Our afternoon sessions are typically when we look at the wider curriculum including History, Geography and Science. Year 1 children will be learning about the Royal Family, The UK and our local area and plants. We also have weekly Art or DT, Music and RSHE lessons.
Class 3 – have PE on Monday and Friday. Children must come to school wearing their PE kits on those days.
Children will receive 2 books each week. 1 book at their current Read Write Inc level and 1 that is matched to sounds covered. They will also be given the opportunity to attend the library and choose a book to share with adults at home. A reading diary will also be in their bags, which must be signed 3 times each week. If children read 3 times a week they get a raffle ticket for a prize draw at half term.
Spellings – Each child will receive spellings matched to their phonic ability. There will be no test however they will be asked to show their knowledge of the spellings within English sessions.
Reading – Reading should also be completed at least 3 times a week for the children to receive a raffle ticket.
Snack Money – £2 a week for pancake and juice. To be paid on a Monday in an envelope with child’s name clearly written on.
We are sure that you will have a fantastic time in Year 1 and we will have so much fun!
Mrs Hughes and Miss Whitwam.
